Sodas are filled with sugar, flavoring, fructose and food colouring. People who drink sodas on a regular basis are more likely to develop proteinuria—an abnormally high level of proteins in urine that’s a risk factor for end-stage kidney disease. Fructose can also damage the kidneys and can cause them to become sensitive to a protein that regulates salts. It is believed that this sensitivity can lead to kidney failure, hypertension, and other health issues. These drinks also contain phosphoric acid which can lead to the formation of kidney stones.
